Archbishop
Philip M. Hannan
New Orleans
The men of Division I name
their division after the Most Reverend Philip M. Hannan, thirteenth
Archbishop of New Orleans. Having served the Archdiocese from
1965-1988, Hannan was a former Chaplain in the US Army 82nd Airborne
Division during the Battle of the Bulge and was Auxiliary Bishop of
Washington, D.C. before coming to New Orleans. While Archbishop of
New Orleans, Hannan oversaw the integration of New Orleans’ Catholic
schools, established a major Catholic television station in New
Orleans, and crowned his efforts with the visit of Pope John Paul II
to the Crescent City in 1987. Still active in retirement, Hannan
continues to oversee his communications network, WLAE-TV. The
Ancient Order of Hibernians named Hannan as its Man of the Year in
1991 and continues to derive inspiration from his energy and spirit.
Division I comprises all
members who live within the corporate limits of the city of New
Orleans.
